Where to skate freestyle near Virginia Beach, VA?
« on: November 09, 2011, 03:30:39 PM »
Hi, board members,
I will be vacationing in Virginia Beach for over a week shortly before our Christmas show and wanted to practice once or twice. Does anyone recommend a rink that offers figure skating times within an hour's drive of the beach?
Many thanks!

There's a rink in Yorktown/Hampton Roads:

Thanks for that tip. They have a lot of hours to choose from, which is good for me.

There are two more rinks in the Virginia Beach area, in addition to Hampton Roads Ice Plex.

Chilled Ponds Ice Sports Complex
1416 Stephanie Way
Chesapeake, VA 23320
757-420-4488
www.chilledponds.com

Iceland Family Skating Center
4915 Broad St.
Virginia Beach, VA 23462
757-490-3999

I skated at all three rinks when I was in the area for business a few years ago.  All had friendly people and between the three rinks, you should be able to easily find some ice time.  Iceland has a smaller rink, but they let me take in an ISI Freestyle class as a walk-on.  On one of the weekends I was there, Hampton Roads Ice Plex had a USFS competition that I went to watch.  I had seen a lot of the skaters working on their programs the previous two weeks, and it was neat to see them in competition.

Enjoy your vacation, and take advantage to skate at some new rinks and meet some new skaters.

I've rearranged our schedule to include Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, for part of our trip. Does anyone recommend a rink near there, too?
