Good for you guys on the step goals!  Just normal walking around, I seem to hit 5000, which is half my goal.  I clearly need to get moving more!

On the training front though (which is really my thing after my knee injury), my friend works for half the rate of the coaches in the gym, so I'm probably going to do that.  He can only fit me in once a week though (and I know myself, and he knows me- I need someone breathing down my back to keep me honest).  Bonus- he does the training for my skating club, so knows what we need.

For those of you who do training- do you find it useful to have a gym membership on the side as well?  He's independent, and I need to verify, but I don't think he has access to any gym.

Went to the gym last night and rewarded myself afterwards by using the massage chair!  I really like that feature of Planet Fitness - trying to get up the courage to use the tanning room, just to see what it's like.  (never been)


I've been thinking of joining planet Fitness, because Gold'sGym is full of scams. How do you like it? Any comments?

Our PLanet fitness locations are new and clean, with locker rooms and showers that work.

They have a variety of machines, with several matching ones of each type. (My former fitness center had one(1) elliptical that I preferred. They started with 6-8, but didn’t repair them when they had problems.  The other ellipticals were too big for me, PF’s are fine.)

No fitness classes, per se, which is a drawback. I like classes.
They have a circuit room for abs and glutes, with a stoplight timer to keep you honest but no one corrects you if you want to skip a station or double up on another.

I like the stretch rooms - lots of space and a cagey apparatus to use, as well as mats and cords, rollers and bands.

Haven’t really used the weight Rea or the TRX suspension.

Free pizza once a month at night and it’s like a party. Free bagels one or Ning a month. They have a snack cooler and table/chairs which is nice. The water fountains have a water bottle fill option.

The massage and tanning are optional - if you get the basic $10 : month membership, they’re no included.

The “black card” membership costst twice as much but let’s you go to any PF location, use the massage/tanning, and you can bring a guests. I chose that option becaus DH won’t use massage/tanning or work out without me. It saved us an annual fee. There is PF near the rink and another near my house,so it’s convenient to have the black card.

I had been going to a PF near work before I retired. It was very clean and had a wide variety of equipment. I went during the day so I don't know how crowded it would have been after work. I live 4 blocks from a YMCA so since retirement I have been going there, mainly for the swimming.

When I first joined PF they had a trainer do a fitness evaluation and work up a training schedule. I think they will do short consultations if you ask. No Personal Trainer type programs were available. For the money PF can't be beat.

I paid $99 a year upfront in January and saved a little more. They didn't offer a corresponding deal for the Black membership.

I've been checking out OU's WellWorks facility and offering. It's run by Ohio University but is not open to undergraduate students (they have their own facility). The annual fee for retirees is $158 per year. There are some initiatives that will pay participants up to $200/ year for successful completion. They offer personal training, group fitness classes, nutrition, exercise machines, assessments by an exercise physiologist, massages, etc.

I never bothered with it while I was working, but now that I have more time, I'm strongly tempted.

Sounds promising!  Our campus recreation facility is open to faculty but they charge us rates comparable to a regular gym membership around here.

I taught 2 snowboard lessons today (2 1/2 hrs total) and can certainly attest to snowboarding having a higher equivalence factor than skiing or skating.

I also taught 1 75 minute ski lesson, clinic-ed for an hour and free skied for an hour.

Total for the day was 63,000 steps plus walking back and forth to slopes.
Pre-bronze MITF, PSIA Ski Instructor, PSIA Childrens Specialist 1, AASI SnowBoard Instructor.

Wow! That's really impressive! Because you have been doing this for a while, I'll bet that you have a very healthy heart. Good job!

For my part, I met or exceeded my 6k step goal every day last week, plus skated for 1-1/2 hours on three days. The skating will increase to my usual 5x per week now that the rink is back to its regular schedule.

As far as getting enough sleep is concerned, being retired has its advantages.  ;)

Hmm, I used to snowboard, but find skiing easier and more natural.....I've written off skiing because of a knee injury, and the fact that it happens during competition season.  One (of the many) things I liked about boarding was that knee injuries were less common, just due to the fact that you're strapped in.  dlbritton- do you agree that's the case?  If so, I might just give boarding another go...but next year...the menscus needs more time, and well, synchro is, and always will be, the priority.

And I am not at all jealous of your lifestyle.  Not at all...... ;)

Now that I'm back to the rink and restarted my gym visits, the 3,000 steps/day goal is too low.  I'm upping it to 4,000/day, despite looking like a slacker compared to the rest of you.  I can always revisit later. 

I found out that you can enter your stats into MindSpring up to four days late, so if you missed a day, it's not a big deal.

STEP GOAL: 4,000/day - up from 3k!  Woot!
SLEEP GOAL: 8-10 hrs/night - doing okay so far, but I'm back to pre-dawn coaching next week, so it's going to be tough.

While I enjoy Skate Forever Strong, I'm a bit annoyed that I have to re-sync my watch every single time I check it.  It doesn't count my steps and I accidentally figured out how to put in my steps manually.  Well, now I don't remember how to do it.  :o :o  There are some glitches with the app that need to be worked out.  All-in-all, I like the challenge, just wish it worked smoother.
