Title: New Episode
Post by: manleywoman on October 22, 2010, 04:04:46 PM
The latest Manleywoman SkateCast is up. Episode #42 talks with George Spiteri, President of SP-Teri boots, about the history of skates, how SP-Teris are different, who has the stinkiest feet, and the worst pair of boots he's ever seen.

And SP-Teri is generously donating a free pair of their Zero Gravity stock boot to a lucky SkateCast listener! Details on how to enter are on the www.manleywoman.com website. Please pass it around, since I'm sure there are a lot of skaters out there who could use new boots!

Thanks.

Hey everyone. The latest Manleywoman SkateCast is (finally) up! It's an interview with the one-of-a-kind Barbara Ann Scott. She's the 1948 Olympic Champion, 4-time Canadian Champion, World/European/North American Champion, and the classiest woman in the sport of figure skating. We discuss her career on and off the ice, her numerous experiences with Sonia Henie, and why her little dog Pierre was her most embarrassing moment in skating.

She also sent me two autographed photos of herself to giveaway to two lucky listeners. So please visit http://www.manleywoman.com/ (http://www.manleywoman.com/) to see how you can win.

Thanks!

Fantastic interview!!

I love the part where she discusses school figures and says, "It's figure skating, not gymnastics! (I'm an old lady and I'm entitled to my opinion.)"

Title: Episode #44: Jojo Starbuck
Post by: manleywoman on January 05, 2011, 07:54:11 PM
The latest MWSC is up! http://www.manleywoman.com (http://www.manleywoman.com)

It's an interview with Jojo Starbuck. With partner Ken Shelley, she won three US titles, two World Bronze medals and was in both the 1968 and 1972 Olympics. We discuss her career on and off the ice, her love for performing, and her incredible story of why the Japanese Federation made her miss a skating practice at the Sapporo Games (um, she needed a SEX test!). The interview is 1 hour and 2 minutes.

There's also a giveaway with this podcast: a $100 gift certificate to Rainbo Sports. Rainbo sells boots, blades, dresses, workout gear, DVDs, training aids, etc etc etc. The contest is open to anyone internationally. Details to enter are here: http://www.manleywoman.com/contests/.

I don't get tons of entries for these contests (yet) so odds are good of winning!

Episode #46 with Yuka Sato is up.

I spoke with Yuka Sato while at the US Nationals in Greensboro. I was VERY nice of her to take time out of her busy schedule while she was there coaching Alyssa and Jeremy. She's so down to earth, and I really enjoyed hearing her perspective on having Olympians as parents, the whole backstage Tonya Harding/Josee Choinard timing at the 1994 Olympics, and her thoughts when Surya Bonaly took off her medal in protest at Yuka's winning the World Championships.

Interview here: http://www.manleywoman.com/ or through the iTunes Store.

She also gave me two photos of herself . . . one of her solo, and one with Jeremy . . . to give away to two lucky listeners. Neither photo is signed, FYI, but they are gorgeous. But if you want to enter, here are the details: http://www.manleywoman.com/contests/

Thanks for listening, and please let others know about the interview!

Episode #47 is an interview with David Jenkins.

David Jenkins won the bronze in the 1956 Olympics, gold in the 1960 Olympics, as well as winning three World Championships and four US titles. He was an amazing jumper in his day, truly one of the few skaters doing triples at all, and was the first person to figure out how to land a triple axel. He talks about training with his brother Hayes Jenkins (1956 Oly Champ), how he loathed figures, and his insanely sparse training schedule.

Listen via the iTunes Store or from my website: http://www.manleywoman.com

There is also a contest with this podcast: a lucky listener can win a private box to Skate For Hope in Columbus, OH on June 18, 2011, which raises tens of thousands of dollars each year for breast cancer research and prevention. The box fits six people, so you can bring your five closest skating buddies. The cast is amazing and includes: Ryan Bradley, Johnny Weir, Rachel Flatt, Yankowskas/Coughlin, Emily Hughes, and Sarah Hughes as emcee. Details on how to enter are here: http://www.manleywoman.com/contests.

Please spread the word about the giveaway to friends everywhere. Every ticket from Skate For Hope contributes $$$ to Breast Cancer research, and its a great event, so even if you don't win, I hope you can buy tickets to go.

Also, please let me know about the sound quality of the interview. This is the second one I've done from my laptop at home: for some reason when I listen to it initially after it's mixed down it sounds perfect, but when I convert it to an MP3, it sounds tinny. This doesn't happen when I do them from my desktop at work. So I think there's something I need to adjust somewhere.

I've missed posting a few podcasts up here, but there are new ones at my site: http://www.manleywoman.com

And if you happened to catch Skating Magazine a few weeks back, there was an article about the Manleywoman SkateCast on pages 26-27. USFS released the online version today, if you want to read it online. It's pages 26-27:

I just uploaded episode #50 this week: an interview with David Kirby. He's an IJS master, coach, former show skater, rink owner, and hilarious guy. Give it a listen:

I just finished listening to the David Kirby podcast. What can I say but WOW!
The last half where he discussed the future of ISI and its relationship with USFSA and PSA was riveting. It was like hearing the story of a train wreck.

Sorry it's been a while since I posted. Life is getting out of control!

I have two podcasts up on http://www.manleywoman.com since I last posted:

#51 with PJ Kwong, canadian coach and commentator.
#52 with Lucinda Ruh, 2 time Swiss Champion and amazing spinner.

Both interviews last about 1 hour and 5 minutes.

Lucinda's contest just started to win a copy of her new book "Frozen Teardrop," and today is the last day to enter the contest for the PJ Kwong book "Taking the Ice."

Have a great holiday everyone, and enjoy!
