Title: Camps and Clinics 2011
Post by: Isk8NYC on January 07, 2011, 10:08:57 PM
AgnesWitt's mentioning summer camps reminded me that I should start a topic for this year.

Feel free to add on any upcoming workshops, clinics or camps you come across!

Edited to add:
If they're adult camps, definitely post the information/links.  Elite training camps, clinics or those camps to any age are also welcome.
I think the smaller, in-house camps are fine to include, but only if the summer camp announcement is linked; just posting a link to the rink's website isn't useful.

Just as a side note, January is US Figure Skating's National Skating Month.

Check your rink calendars to see what special activities are taking place at your local rinks.

Our rink has synchro and solo demonstrations on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day followed by free group lessons and a public skating session.

MARIPOSA SEMINAR/SUMMER 2011 SCHOOL APPLICATION FORM

Seminar: June 20-24, 2011
Summer School: June 27-August 12, 2011

All levels of skater are welcome!   CanSkate-Adult-Competitive
(Last year, adults were invited to attend a specific week of the seminar, but I don't see that noted anywhere for 2011.)

The Mariposa application form looks intimidating! However, the home page does mention mention "Adult competitive." Perhaps our Canadian friends could tell us more.

There's a note in the brochure that the adult camp is $403 but it's not listed on the application form as a specific item, it would just be seminar.  They put out a separate adult brochure last year.   It is available, June 20-24.

It's a great adult week.  They've always had adults attend the seminar week but they were placed in the various groups with the kids.  Last year they made a specific adult group and put it into the groups rotation, there's usually 4-5 kids groups. Everyone rotates between, stroking/spins, jumps, interpretive skating plus off ice warm up and fitness and a lecture session.  I think the adults get food catered for lunch, I meant to ask someone about that.  And their own change room possibly.   I was only there for two days last year observing.

A competitive adult at Mariposa is someone who is competing in the Adult Nationals.  They also have ex competitive skaters who are too young for adult and who compete in Triathlon, or gold/open freeskate since our adult doesn't start until age 25.     I know a lot of adults who go to Barrie to take lessons specifically from the coaches there on an intermittent basis.    Their ticket ice is determined by levels so elite/non-elite sessions.

One of our "skating moms who also skate" took her son to Mariposa last year and said the adult lessons that she watched were fantastic.  Her DS (he really is a darling) is landing doubles and she's working on waltz jumps.

She really wants to join the son on the ice this eyar (different groups, of course) but she has to watch her budget.  I hope she can pull it off - she and her husband make a lot of sacrifices for the son's skating.

Welcome to Lake Placid Adult Figure Skating!

You will be starting the week off on Sunday with a reception at 7pm (location TBD). Coaches will be introduced and copies of all schedules will be available. Skaters may register at the 3-5pm registration or they can wait until the reception.

Throughout the week, you can skate on any adult session that you choose. You may also choose to participate in on-ice and off-ice group classes or special seminars. Private instruction is also available and we suggest that you contact the coach of your choice prior to your arrival.

Back again this year by popular demand is the Wednesday night party! Put away your skating attire and get dressed up for a night of fun! It will be a night to remember featuring games, drinks and prizes.

The week will conclude with an Adult Exhibition followed by a reception in the Hall of Fame Room on Saturday.

If you're still deciding whether or not to come, let some other adults tell you about their experiences...

I have a friend who was just talking about how he has a fantasy about Dorothy Hamill, but it wasn't about skating with her, lol.  Nothing bad - he would just like to meet her, so I told him to sign up the for camp and enjoy the food & company.

Aspen Adult Skate Camp and Ice House Adult Skate Camp appear to be missing in action. At least I can't find any reference to them.

I know the Aspen camp had gone from 2 sessions e years ago to 1 session last year, so it may not have been worthwhile for them to continue. I was thinking of going this year. They had really, really, spectacular ice. I mean the ice was like bridal satin.

I would be shocked if the Ice House Adult Skate Camp was not happening this year. However, been to the website, nothing there.

Maybe someone on the boards has contacts at either of these places and can fill us in.

I believe the Ice House Adult Camp was cancelled last year due to one of the rinks being out of commission.  They rarely put the word out until March or April, so be patient and we'll find out soon enough.

Aspen is also not on the 'net.  I did a bit of snooping last week and didn't find anything about their adult camp.

This is a kiddie camp, not for adults.

Winning Techniques Camp in Ontario, Canada has a summer-long camp for figure skating and synchro skating.  Skaters can be day or resident campers and the facility offers cabins and trailer spots if you want to stay onsite with your kids.

They offer "scholarships" as well https://www.winningtechniques.com/scholar.php
Probably just a come-on to put you on their mailing list.

The coaching staff doesn't interest me - there's not enough variety in the skating styles, other than the Moves Guru.  (Who is worth the trip!)

Does anyone know anything about the Grassroots week long camp, this year held near Boston? We would like to go but the airfare right now is way too much! Any pros or cons? Is it worth it?
Thanks!

I've attended a few coaching seminars with Audrey Weisiger and Sheila Thelen and they were very good.  They really think things through and explain technique well and consistently.  You do have to look at their faculty for each seminar.  Not all coaches go to every seminar, but the particular one you asked about, in Walpole, MA has a full staff.  I've observed seminars with Ryan Bradley and he's a great role model and coach for young skaters, especially boys.

I've never heard a negative thing about these seminars, only praise.

Still watching for Aspen Ice Gardens' summer adult camp posting.

Last year's brochure and information wasn't available until May 2010 for the single August week, so we may be waiting a while longer.

Thanks So much! We already signed up, bought our tickets too. It is spendy for two kids, but I think they will get alot out of it. We are excited!I just hope they can remember everything, we are going without a coach.

It will be interesting to go to the Hack, esp since last year's camp was canceled. I learned a lot from Edward. And it was nice seeing (and skating with) all the adult skaters! That in itself made it worthwhile. Putting up with the super-cold rink? eh, not so much  ;)

This may be New Joisey. I can't tell if it's kids or kids + adults. I never heard of the coaches or skaters, but that doesn't mean anything. It includes a judge to explain judging, which seems interesting.

HOWELL — The Garden State Figure Skating Club has announced a Figure Skating Seminar will take place May 7-8 at Howell Ice World.

World and Olympic coach Robert Tebby and world and Olympic competitor Tugba Karademir will lead the seminar.

Tebby has 29 years of coaching experience and specializes in technical analysis and development of jumping techniques.

Karademir is a two-time Olympic, eight-time world and nine-time European Championships competitor with eight years of coaching experience. She has knowledge of all aspects of skating development.

World and National skating judge Dr. Lawrence Mondschein is scheduled to appear and present the details of judging competitions to skaters and parents.

David DeFazio, the 2007 Swiss Ice Dance champion and an international competitor, will teach private stroking lessons.

On May 7, there will be private lessons from 8:30 a.m.-1:45 p.m., followed by a figure skating seminar from 2-4:30 p.m. The seminar will resume May 8 with an additional session from noon-2:30 p.m. followed by private lessons from 3-7 p.m.

The cost of the two-day seminar is $175 in addition to private-lesson fees. Registration and fees are due in advance.

Lara Walsh, president of the Garden State Skating Club, said, "Our club continually aims to promote figure skating within our community, and we are extremely proud and excited to be able to offer this seminar to all our skaters, parents and coaches and to anyone interested in figure skating.

"The purpose of the club is to encourage and foster the instruction, practice and advancement of members in free skating, pair skating, dance, moves in the field, synchronized and other areas of figure skating. The club encourages and cultivates a community of interest among ice skaters."

This year marks 57 years for the Garden State Figure Skating Club, an affiliate of United States Figure Skating.

You have GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!! Man! We were so looking forward to this! (shuffling off to email the ladies....)

I would like to do the G2C but it's too long, too expensive, and probably too intensive for us....(and sounds like it's geared to the kids).

There have been a few G2C seminars in this area (one was just held locally) and they welcomed adults (a friend went and he said it was fantastic), but you had to be working on an axel to register (you didn't have to have landed it). I don't know if that's a seminar requirement, or a local requirement.

I only just started on my lutz lol! I'm sure we'll figure something out. Last year the ladies rented a condo for a week at Ocean City, Maryland and skated at a hotel that had an ice rink.

The G2C  has three levels, basic jumps, axles/doubles and working on triples so you would be more than fine.I would assume they would welcome adults, I think a few of the coaches are geared to working with adults. It is expensive, we wouldnt be going if I hadnt of won one registation though an auction.
Hope you find something!

Thanks for the info! If they have a seminar in our area we might consider it, otherwise we will do our "summer condo camp" which I missed last summer because of classes.  I did notice that U of De is having a one-day seminar for the STARS program, might look into that.

I just signed up for this adult seminar. I've only been to Sun Valley once, to train some off-ice coaches at a fitness facility called Zenergy, but that was before I started skating myself. Any recommendations about where to stay?

PS - according to the website, the registration deadline is coming up soon. Will I see any of you there this summer?

Do you know if the adult weeks are concurrent with kids camp or exculsively for adults?  I would like to take a few adult classes while my daughter attends kids camp.  Are the activities this week geared strictly toward adults?  Thank you!  -Very helpful forum, I'm glad I stumbled upon it!

August 21-27, 2011

Yes, the adult weeks are concurrent with the kids on separate ice surfaces & with separate off-ice activities. Last time I was at LP there were several moms on the adult ice with their kids in the other program. It seems to work out really well for the whole family.

I wish I could go! I'm back in school (grrrr!) by then, although some of the ladies at my rink were tossing around the idea of going. Not sure if they will actually do it though.

I was miffed when I saw this, as this WAS the same weekend that the Adult camp was originally scheduled for.  Says open for all levels from juvenile-elite including adult (although adult-only sessions are limited to twice per week in the evening), runs through the summer. Pay as you go plan for on/off ice.

Maybe there will be another adult workshop day at Crown at the end of summer.  But last year it was a Saturday.  I'll guess August 20 this year.
