Title: Show Off Your Skates!
Post by: Isk8NYC on August 31, 2010, 09:47:47 AM
Every skating board needs a "Show Off Your Skates" thread.

Here are my new ones from May 2010 - Custom Klingbeils with Wilson Gold Seal blades

BEAUTIFUL !   we are awaiting the arrival of my DS's new Custom Klings (thanks to you and formerly-d b n y now Sk8dream) for helping us in getting to Klingbeil for the fitting ... yours are so pretty ... I envy you the US pricing on Gold Seals ... sigh.  Will take pictures of the old battered ones and post side-by-side with the new ones when they arrive :)

Those blades were fairly new on my old skates, so I just moved them to these skates. Fortunately, the blade size was the same.  Now, I have a backup pair of skates (old ones) and a pair of patch skates that I never use.  One of these days, I'll get back into a groove.

I set up my own photobucket account at www.photobucket.com.  You upload the photos to the albums there and they assign a web address link that you can use with the board to show the photos.

LOL maybe its mad I neglected it 4 so long  ;D- OK try again!

I'm not sure the quality of the blade, if anyone knows how good they are please let me know - since they are not the named blades on the box & they have developed rust, I'd hope to convince them to put on Club 2000's if they are better & the chance to change them over is closing fast....

These are my favorite pair of skates EVER...ZERO pain, no horrible break-in period, super comfortable, and great ankle support in just the right areas.

These are my SP-Teri KT-2 boots.  I am doing jumps through double axel in them and for nearly one year of skating in them, they've held up great.  What makes them good, IMO, is that SP-Teri made the boot soft in most areas, but all of the support goes in the tab, which you see where it's marked on the outside of the boot.  The boots are also heat moldable, which is great.

I was in so much shock when I tried the boots on.  I asked my skate guy repeatedly if I got the right boots because there was no way I wouldn't feel SOME pain.  I experienced years of painful break-ins back in the "old days," so I was happy to find out how much boot technology has changed over the years, especially after returning to skating after 8 years away.

My previous boots, which I had in 2001, were SP-Teri Advantage, which were for triples and quads.  OMG, those boots were so horrible breaking in, I had to see a doctor.

My blades are Pattern 99, which are great now that I'm used to them.  It took about 2 weeks to get comfortable spinning in them.  My jump landings are nearly silent, and the 8' rocker makes spinning better.

Here are my old faithful, broken down, and too large Jackson Freestyles ready for the pasture:

My brand new babies.  I somehow found $129 SP Teri Pro in size 11.)  The correct size and ready for blades and Sk8Tape:
(I will finally be able to actually skate again.)

And my used $40 Ultima Freestyle blades waiting to be moved to the SP Teri's:
(Yes, they are too short for the Jackson boots, but fit the SP Teri Pro's.  I only tried them out on these boots for a couple of weeks.)

Off to the pro shop for mounting and fitting...

Basic black all the way - all of them are Riedells. I'm missing some department-store skates from the '60s and Bronze Stars from 2000, but I do remember the very first time I ice skated, it was in a pair of used white women's skates that someone gave to my mother. She never used them.

One cold day my brother, a friend, and I asked to borrow them. We took them to the frozen river behind our house, and the three of us took turns.

I was hooked.

my Riedell TS 133s! <3 ^_^ I love them! a tiny bit beat up but eh. They are leather boots with a PVC sole. I think they said these'll last up to Freestyle 1 or 2...i dont remember...

Those boots look brand new, still (fromt the picture).

Yea, I have a new pair of Kling's on order right now at a lower stiffness because of the same problem (trips to the doctor, left boot doesn't want to break in, etc.).

I will keep the current pair for when I'm doing most of the doubles consistently, but not being able to bend easily is destroying my spins and landings (it ricochets you to the back of your blade sometimes, especially when your legs are getting tired).  I'm super excited and can't wait for them to come in.  I even canceled half of my lessons while I wait.  It will be worth it.  After talking with the fitter it seems like Klingbeil sent me a C width even though he had put it in for A width, which probably had much to do with the blade alignment and foot pain issues I experienced, as well.

Am I the only guy who gets black boots with brown soles (not by choice, they just seem to always come that way, and I forgot to tell my fitter to make sure these were black O.o)?

No, you're not; my kid has them on his Klings, and so does Kurt Browning on the Riedells he's using at present (and often has in the past).  Actually, we had to make a request to get the brown soles:  the "norm" is black  and sealed apparently on the customs.

I know at least a dozen guys with black boots/brown soles.  I like the look; why are you leaving it up to chance with these boots?  Contact both the fitter and Klingbeil to tell them what color you want the soles/heels to be now to save yourself more complaints later.  Klingbeil's standard for men's boots is black/black, so if you ended up with black/brown, the fitter probably chose that option for you.

I guess you use stock Klingbeils since you order by width instead of by measurement.  If the fitter ordered one width and Klingbeil sent another, the fitter should have noticed when the order arrived.  A to C is a huge mistake that should have been caught.

Personally, I think the fitter is making excuses to cover his ***.  I wonder if the skates were really ordered for you or if they were leftovers that he passed along to you.  Is your name on the soleplate?

I'm so excited because I get a new pair in the next few weeks! My ten year old reidells are too big for me now! Guess that's what happens when you buy them as an overweight preteen and then get back into the sport as a more in shape 20-something. :)

I actually just joined so I could add a picture :D

Here's mine.. old boots are Custom SP-Teri's circa 1997 (which are now far too narrow for me), new boots are Jackson Elite Plus and about a year old (however in that past year i've probably skated about 20 hours total.. they're barely broken in now) - I'm probably overbooted in them, but they're pretty comfy and have been easier to break in than my SP-Teri's were back in the day, so I'm not complaining.  Blades are the same Phantom Specials I bought 14 years ago... love those blades :)

Glad to hear the repair is working for you.  Do you know if the shop let Reidell know, or did you give them a call?  It just seems wrong that they would rip out like that.  :(
Title: Re: Show Off Your Skates!
Post by: PinkLaces on February 21, 2011, 01:11:18 AM
I was disappointed in the shop's response, but I needed them fixed asap.  They ripped on a Monday and I had competition on Saturday.  I supposed I could've scratched, but I promised my DD I'd do Jump & Spin with her if she landed her axel (she landed both by the way).  I went to a great shoe repair place that the shop recommended.  They fix professional hockey players skates.

The kicker is that the holes on the other side need the same kind of surgery.  It's $45/side.  If the other skate needs it too, that's $180.  I'd rather put that toward new boots.  They aren't broken down at all.  I had them professionally fitted so it's not like they're too narrow. I have had them for 14 months and skate 4-5 days/week for about an hour and a half per session.

I hope I can get down to Reidell this week.  I think they need to look at this. Everyone that I've talked to who's gone down there has had a good response.  Hopefully, I'll get the same.

I hope so - that's really not normal.  Yes, the holes will stretch, but not tear out like that.  The type of laces often helps widen or elongate the holes, but those look like the laces that came with the skates, so that shouldn't be the case.

Good luck!

Just for posterity, my new Jackson Competitors with Aspire blades.  It's a step-down from Klingbeils with Gold Seals, but I definitely like them.  The Klingbeils have to go back to the shop and I needed a decent pair of spares to wear for coaching.

Didn't have them heat-molded and the ankle area seems pretty narrow - it's hard to seat my heel all the way back.
I changed out the insoles because I needed more arch support and because the boot seemed really "deep" to me.  The width is okay, but the depth (top-insole) was wierd.  Not using the top hooks because it's not necessary.

(I wish Jackson wouldn't do the logo on the tongue like that though.  And my last boots didn't have the plate on the heel either.  I don't think they need to advertise from my feet.  Otherwise I LOVE them- they are so pretty.  Although I no longer have a signature on my back left outside. Maybe that's why I can't backspin anymore...)

(I wish Jackson wouldn't do the logo on the tongue like that though.

As Isk8NYC told me "that's what skate tape is for".
Personally I think it looks cheap. If I want anything on my heel I want it to be my name (you can do that with saddles and it looks cool)

I think that everyone above the premier (well, and finesse too) doesn't have that... my elite plus don't, but they do have the heel plate.  I am not bothered by the heel plate - harlick and sp-teri use them too, they just place them on the side.  And it could be worse... Wifa, Graf and Risport stitch their logos into the backstrap on some higher-level boot models - I think *that* looks tacky!

I'm not too bothered by the gosh-awful cheap looking tacky gold logo on the tongue-it's hidden by my tights lol! 88) I had though about removing the plate on the heel, countersinking some holes and plugging them with sparkly stones!!!! Maybe a line of them across.....after all, I did bling my laces!

I just got new Jackson Competitors in the spring.  I hope to continue breaking them in once I go back to my during-the-school-year 12 hours shifts.  I'll go pretty much straight after Tuesday Chemistry class.  I still need to permanently  mount the blades and waterproof the soles.

As Isk8NYC told me "that's what skate tape is for".
I did?  I don't remember that, but it is a good idea.

It was close to 100°F here today, so I left my skates in their box on the sunny front porch.  Let them cool on my feet and my heel made it to the back!  That should help a bit.
Title: Re: Show Off Your Skates!
Post by: Elsa on July 20, 2011, 07:18:43 PM
I complained to my fitter when I was sliding forward in my Jackson's.  He asked me to lace my skates, and as soon as I skipped the top hooks he said "there's your problem - lace 'em all the way up." I did, and I have a nice tight seat in the heel now.  Oops.

I'm not a fan of the Jackson logos either - I think the bronze heel plate looks cheap.  Riedell has a brushed nickel logo plate on the side of their heels and I love that one.  When my old Riedells were rebuilt, I actually asked them to put them on because my boots didn't originally have them.

The Harlick name plates are optional - they come in the box with the boots, and you put them on if you want, and if you don't, you don't. I don't think I have ever put them on because it is one more place to worry about really sno-sealing! Speaking of sno-sealing...I really need to do that soon...
Title: Re: Show Off Your Skates!
Post by: Purple Sparkly on July 21, 2011, 12:58:59 PM
My last pair of SP Teri's came with the name plate already affixed to the side of the heel.  Harlick has had the name plates for as long as I can remember, but SP Teri just started doing it in the last 10 years, or so.  Reidell and Jackson also did not have them for a long time.  What I really dislike is the SP Teri logo on the powertab of the KT 2 and 3.  I don't much care for the logos on the skates other than the stamp on the underside purely for identification purposes for people that are not able to identify them by their features alone.  My thought is that if my skates fit properly and are made well, the recommendations I give of the boots are going to be much more valuable than the name plate on the heel.

So I went to see my skate tech today for a sharpening. In our chit chat I called my boots Jackson Classiques. He looked at them and said, "No, these are Competitors." Well, dang it, that a stiffness 55, so on the spot I ordered a pair of Finesse (also stiffness 55, with some nice dance touches). It may take me a year to break them in (just skating warmups in them), but by then my Competitors (!) will be ready to go.

As soon as they're in I'll post pictures. My present ones are all yellowy and crummy looking.

I was told that the Finesse have the same stiffness as the Freestyle, which is less than the Competitor, so they might not be as stiff as you are thinking.  I wanted them to help with toe point/knee bend, but my coach didn't want me jumping in them.  They should be great for dance, which IIRC is what you do.

ETA: The Jackson website lists the Women's Finesse and Women's Freestyle at 45 (Child's freestyle at 40) and the Competitor 55 Women/50 childs.
I just got the Premier (listed at 65 women/60 childs) and while it is stiff, it doesn't feel like a cement block at all, I can bend very easily in the forward direction, I just feel the stiffness against the ankle when landing jumps.  I don't know if it is the women's or the child's.  I think at size 4, I've moved up to women's.  I know my old competitors were child's, because they were slightly cheaper :)

My tech had me try on a Premiere just to test for size (I think they're rated 80 65 (edit Skittl's right). Oh, my, that felt like a cement block to me. However, my friend the Big Guy went through two pairs (edit) of Elite Supreme-I think- with stiffness 85 (end edit) a year, ditto for blades.  It's all about the skater isn't it?

A size 4! OMG. You've got tiny delicate toddler feet. I'm in a 6C (old lady feet).

Not a good shot, but they were about to take K's skates away to exchange them for the next size up, and I just had to grab a pic.  So, here are K's and my skates crashed out on the pro shop floor. I have Jackson Premieres, she had (and has again) Reidell 121s.

Here's a thumbnail, which you can click on for large size:

The 8' rockers makes you spin better?  I thought a 7' rocker is supposed to be easier to find the sweet spot than an 8' and that 8' is better for speed and power in stroking.  I am going to be ordering new blades this month so I'm really interested! What to do?

My tech had me try on a Premiere just to test for size (I think they're rated 80 65 (edit Skittl's right). Oh, my, that felt like a cement block to me.

I had the Premiere's last year.  Totally like cement blocks with stuff tongues and wide heel pockets.

Every skating board needs a "Show Off Your Skates" thread.

Here are my new ones from May 2010 - Custom Klingbeils with Wilson Gold Seal blades

Here is a picture of mine!
Custom Klingbeil K's (9/10 strength.. yowza!) with Icy Pink Paramount 440's (currently in my favorite hippo soakers).
Love my skates! Switching laces to pink soon though, when I get motivated to do it.

New SP-Teri SuperTeri's with John Wilson Gold Seals.  Need to be heat-molded and punched a little, but so far, so good.

Semi-stock: added a v-cut and split width at extra $$$.  I had the blades in the garage, so I saved some money there.

Very pretty! Planning on getting Custom Klingbeils when I properly start my doubles (only just bought new skates on Sunday so I'm hoping they will last almost a year), I'm assuming you'd recommend them?

I absolutely love them. They are like slippers! The customer service for me was fantastic, I emailed directly with Richie Perna. They walked me through the process and gave me personalized reccomendations. When I needed more ankle space (I have some freakish ankles) they fixed them for free and overnighted them back to me (free!). I will be getting Klingbeils for the rest of my life. I also have the lambs wool/rubber combination tongue and highly reccommend it, so warm yet still secure! Also the clarino lining as it keeps things not so stinky as it is antibacterial. But yes, I LOVE LOVE LOVE my klingbeils!!!

They sound lovely!!

I have dodgy ankles soon so heat moulding was perfect for me.

But I live in England  :'( would I still be able to order them and fax them a tracing of my feet as I wouldn't be able to try them on, do you think?

I wasn't able to go to the store either.
What happens is they send you a foam mould with instructions on how to use it (not hard!) then papers for tracings of your feet and measurements. You will need to provide height, weight, jump, and level information. It was really a pretty simple process, and I just called them when filling out the options sheet and they walked me through what everything was and what they would reccommend for my feet.

I was lucky as my coach was trained to fit them, but really it was quite simple! then it is 4 weeks to make.

I don't think they do heat moulding, they may, but mine are full customs and I highly reccommend that! Go like their facebook as well as they sometimes run sales, I got around $100 off!

I wouldn't have thought I'd need the heat moulding with customs anyway :)

Thank you for your help!

I've changed skate brands so much so I'm hoping I will change to Klingbiels and stick with them! I fell in love with Riedells and then realised there were much better brands out there. I now have Jacksons as I could get them fitted at my rink (even though its still over an hour and a half away) and they're fabulous! Still loving the look of Klingbiels much more though...

It is definitely worth emailing! We exchanged a lot of emails before I committed to buy. They really are great with answering questions via call/email! :D

;D thank you for your help! I'll be sure to contact them soon (think I better break in my new skates first before I ask my parents for another new pair, haha)

you are welcome! I love mine.
Expensive but not unusually so for customs! (the color was only an extra $100!)

They're totally worth it though! (I may change my mind when it comes to the day I need to buy my own skates, and pay for my own lessons though...  ;) )

On Monday, I bought new Jackson Elles from our pro-shop. I love them! I got them molded. They felt fine in the store, but when I skated Monday night, the left felt perfectly fine but the right was killing me in the arch area. I got it punched out yesterday and have been wearing them around the house. Now I discovered I need to get the pinky toe area on the same boot punched out. No big deal though. I took out the insole to see how my foot fit on it. If I squeeze my foot I can fit it perfectly; otherwise my toes hang off a little from the sides. It's not painful except for that one toe.  I cant wait for these to break in so I can skate properly. I can't even do proper 3-turns or t-stops. I think they're a smidge too sharp as well.  88)

Cute!  I have a similar colored metallic jacquard textile paint (Lumiere I think?) I've considered painting my boots with.. I'm just afraid to go for it!

Here's my skates. Stock Jackson Competitors (original laces!) and Mk Pro blades (half inch recreational ROH)

The cuts in the boot are explained in my blog (http://icedoesntcare.blogspot.com/2013/08/surgical-intervention-on-figure-skating.html) about a foot issue I had.

Do you like my skull and crossbones soakers?

I must be the top poster in this thread.  Just picked up my new Harlick customs with Wilson Gold Seal Revolution blades.  Light and shiny most importantly, well-fitted and aligned.  Can't wait to take them for a spin!

Mine are my Avatar, Riedell Silver Stars 355, an older model from ebay. Bought "used" but never worn. The only difference in them today is that they have Coronation Dance blades on them instead of the blades they came with which were just a basic MK single star. They also have my crystal laces on them, love the bling things. They are my first real skate, and were $100 for the skates and the blades. Though it is hard to compare since they no longer make this exact skate, new prices for the skates and blades would have probably been at least $500 new. They fit me like second skin, deal of the century for me and kind of a sign from the Gods that I was really meant to start skating seriously, I could not have afforded such a skate so early on.
