Title: Dance and Figure Skating
Post by: sk8great on February 02, 2013, 07:16:18 PM
What type of dance will help with figure skating? My mom wants to enroll me in some lessons that will help with figure skating.

Ice dance! Sorry could not resist...

What specific parts of your skating would you like to improve?

Ballet is an excellent idea.

I think ballroom dance would be fun.  It would help with musicality and style.

I've taken ballet, and am doing ballroom now.  The ballroom has been very helpful for ice dance, but I think ballet is better overall for free skating.

At my DD's last ice dance test, the evaluator commented on her posture, carriage, graceful arms and general quality of motion, and toe point.  When we explained that she studies ballet fairly seriously she nodded and said that she had suspected that already based on the perfect bun and head position, and, that ballet, well-studied and well-taught, would certainly explain the neat posture, etc.  Modern dance, well taught, will also help with musicality and interpretation and performance quality.
