The Ice Ranch in Littleton, CO has a groupon deal today: $20 public skate for four or $30-$45 skating lessons.

http://www.groupon.com/deals/the-ice-ranch-denver-1

The author should get a gold star for creative writing:

Quote
If woolly mammoths had mastered the triple Lutz, they would've made it out of the Ice Age and into the Bronze Age, if not the Silver or Gold Age. Ensure your long-term survival with today's Groupon to The Ice Ranch, located in Littleton.

<snip>

Ice slicers try out their frictionless feet during instructional courses and recreational skate sessions at The Ice Ranch’s new skating facility. Four friends or one giant tarantula can strap on the four pairs of bladed boots and glide across the ice for up to two hours at a time during the public skate sessions, which are scheduled at different times throughout the week. All ages can participate in the 30-minute Learn to Skate class, during which skaters can acquire the skills needed to maintain their balance while sashaying atop frozen ponds. During the one-hour Learn to Play Hockey class, instructors tutor prospective wings and enforcers of all ages in skating, puck control, passing, and shooting. Although skate rentals are included in enrollment, students are responsible for supplying their own hockey equipment and fans.

I always wanted to take a giant tarantula ice skating.  I suspect the author is a hockey player/fan, lol.

This is what my semi-local one said:
Quote
Public open skate allows gold-medal-seeking ice masters to practice triple axels, camel spins, and quintuple belly flops while less-experienced gliders focus on basic principles, such as staying upright and gracefully colliding with the wall. This deal includes skate rental for those who do not own skates or who were born with feet instead of leg-blades.

My question though: If I buy the groupon, can I practice camel spins, because it says I can?  It's against the rink rules to do them on publics.  False advertising!

Groupon deal for Funtabulous in Corpus Christi, TX:

http://livingsocial.com/deals/89623-two-hours-of-ice-skating

WARNING: This rink has a synthetic skating surface!

Quote
No sub-freezing temperatures necessary: This indoor rink uses synthetic ice technology to let patrons skate to their hearts' content no matter the weather. Despite its name, synthetic ice provides a completely realistic experience, allowing skaters to glide and drift as if they were doing figure eights on a New England pond in the middle of January.

Groupon deal for the Blazers Ice Centre in Ohlahoma City, OK:  Ice-Skating Outing for Four or Eight-Week Learn-to-Skate Program

http://www.groupon.com/deals/blazers-ice-centre-okc?c=dnb&p=3

Quote
Ice is nothing more than water that won't let people swim in it, and must be publically chastised in the form of sharp metallic blades that merrily crisscross to and fro across the frozen surface. Mete out aqueous justice with today’s Groupon to Blazers Ice Centre.

Choose between the following options:

•For $32, you get a skating package for four (a $64 value). The package includes: •One session admission for four adults or children
•Four skate rentals
•Four baskets of chicken fingers, including fries and a drink

•For $50, you get an eight-week learn-to-skate program (a $132 value including $12 membership fee).
Eight-week classes are held on the following dates and times:
 •October 25–December 13: Tuesdays at 6:45 p.m.
 •October 30–December 17: Saturdays at 11:30 a.m.

Blazers Ice Centre, home of the Oklahoma University Sooners, lets groups embark on frosty fun adventures during daily public-skate hours. Twirling and toe-picking across a frozen indoor pond marries exercise with entertainment and gives budding Dorothy Hamills and Wayne Gretzkys a chance to practice camel spins, fast breaks, and basic stopping technique, such as running into a wall. Fueled by a meal of chicken fingers, fries, and a drink, a foursome of ice gliders can enjoy freestyle skating to their heart's content.

Registered instructors mold slip 'n' sliders of all ages into graceful ice traversers in the fundamentals of the U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills Program. Pupils wearing either their own skates or a pair of rentals (included with this Groupon) ease onto the rink, as skate mavens impart the basics of icemanship, such as distinguishing between a triple lutz, a double salchow, or a single angry zamboni.

After the invigorating lessons, class members gambol about during public skating, where the Sooners’ palpable aura acts as an inspirational beacon to aspiring skaters.

Groupon deal: http://www.groupon.com/deals/miami-kendall-ice-arena?c=dnb&p=4

Kendall Ice Arena – Miami, Florida
Ice-Skating Outing for Two or Figure-Skating Classes

Quote
Like the best-tasting pieces of Halloween candy, shoes are better when they have blades attached to them. Strap on sharp slippers with today's Groupon to Kendall Ice Arena. Choose between the following options:
•For $10, you get open-skate admission and skate rentals for two people (a $20 value).
•For $40, you get six group figure-skating classes, plus entry to public skate sessions with each class, and a one-year U.S. Figuring Skating basic-skills registration for one (a $95.50 value).

Kendall Ice Arena appeals frost-seeking athletes with daily open-skate sessions and an array of figure-skating lessons. During open skate, two ice carvers of any ages, skill level, and blade sharpness can take advantage of the 200'x58' sheet. Those dropping in on karaoke night, held Thursdays from 6:30–10 p.m., can glide and twirl or belt out renditions of "I Wanna Skate With Somebody."

Those opting for the six classes will learn from a professional teacher in the U.S. Figure Skating basic-skills curriculum. The eight-level program gradually introduces fledgling fancy-feet to the fundamental moves. Each 30-minute session boasts dynamic ice instruction as novices glide through essential techniques, including moving backward, stopping, turning, and carving cursive love poems into freshly zambonied ice. Enrollment in the program includes the USFS registration fee, which is good for one year. Skaters can suit up in their own skates or rent blades for $3 a day during their lessons, and take advantage of open skate afterward.

Groupon deal for West Hartford, CT

http://www.groupon.com/deals/veterans-memorial-ice-rink-1

Quote
Like the best-tasting pieces of Halloween candy, shoes are better when they have blades attached to them. Engage in serrated skating with today's Groupon: for $7, you get public skating admission for two at Veterans Memorial Ice Skating Rink (up to a $13.50 value).

Pairs of blade runners head to Veterans Memorial Ice Skating Rink to pirouette and glide through 60- to 90-minute open-skate sessions held in a climate-controlled environment. The 200'x85' rink is regulation NHL size, allowing skaters to recreate the quadruple axel Wayne Gretzky used to do as he crossed the endzone. An electric-powered zamboni handles all smoothing-related concerns, ensuring the air is free of emissions. Visitors must bring their own skates or acquire a pair of Riedell soft skates from the rental shop for $4. Stop by the arcade to sharpen hand-eye coordination, or visit the snack bar and skate shop for a snow cone served inside a hockey mask. Check the schedule for open-skate days and times.

I'm adding the "serrated skating" to the list of post count titles, lol.

My cousin used to write for Groupon - they have a staff of writers that research the deals and write up the text. They're expected to be really silly and maybe have a bit of an inside joke feel, if possible. She liked writing for them, but was mostly doing it while between "real" jobs.

Arkansas Skatium offers graceful gliders their choice of eight-wheeled or double-bladed fun on the facility’s radiant rinks. Roller skates gather speed as skaters skim across the slick surface, reliving youthful fantasies of becoming a roller-derby star or 1950s drive-in waitress. Coast among the crowds as the upbeat melodies of disco classics and retro rock put a little pep in each push. Switching climates, fun-loving freewheelers can spin and twirl over to the ice rink to practice double toe loops, triple axels, or quadruple stackers before chowing down on slices of piping-hot pizza blanketed in a choice of pepperoni, sausage, or plain cheese.

Skaters ages 4 and older seeking to sharpen their frozen-surface skills may opt instead to enroll in a series of ice-skating lessons. In addition to 30-minutes of personalized instruction, participants garner an hour of practice time on the ice and three months of open skating by blade, wheel, or greased tennis shoe. Although skate rentals are included, students receive a complimentary $20 credit towards the purchase of their very own set of sharp shoes from Arkansas Skatium's pro shop.

groupon deal for Raleigh Center Ice (formerly Raleigh RecZone) in Raleigh, NC
http://www.groupon.com/deals/raleigh-center-ice

•For $10, you get ice-skating passes for two (a $20 value).
•For $18, you get ice-skating passes for four (a $40 value).

Not sure I care for the tone of the "creative writing" on this one, which includes this blurb:

Quote
Atop Raleigh Center Ice’s freshly zambonied rink, skaters zip and twirl through nearly daily public-skating sessions. After lacing up the provided rental skates or strapping ice cubes to sneakers, guests can glide over the frost-encrusted Carolina Hurricanes’ logo, jettisoning down the length of the NHL–level rink. Ice jockeys of all levels can fly across the ice in tandem or barrel toward figure skaters in synchronized quartets almost any day of the week, practicing snowplow stops or full-chested hockey slams. The recently remodeled rink aims to accommodate the youth hockey groups and freelance skaters of the community, and boasts a lofty new lobby complete with plans for a pro shop and sports grill.
"barrel toward figure skaters" and "full-chested hockey slams?"

I'm tempted to write a note to the rink manager.

Portland Ice Arena, Portland, Maine

Quote

For $3, you get one open-skate admission and ice-skate rental (up to a $7 value).

For $15, you get a family skating outing good for admission and skate rental for up to seven people (up to a $49 value).

For $50, you get one party package (up to a $150 value). Each package includes:
•Admission for up to 20 skaters
•Up to 20 skate rentals
•Party locker room rental

Since 1985, skaters of all skill levels have glided across Portland Ice Arena, from first-time rink trekkers to practicing Portland Pirates. Public-skating season runs from mid-June to April with open-skate times available throughout the week, and the rink may be reserved for special events such as birthday parties, adult and youth hockey groups, company events, and penguin family reunions. Uninspired blades regain their edge after a trip to the arena's sharpening station, and the Cheap Skate Cafe fills empty stomachs and allows skaters to hydrate without the risk of adhering their tongues to high-traffic surfaces.

groupon deal for C3 Ice Academy at CU Recreation Center, Boulder, CO

http://www.groupon.com/deals/catalystic-cadence-collective

Quote
Some icy sports have land-based counterparts; ice hockey has field hockey, curling has bowling, and figure skating has competitive dances held atop oil slicks. Keep your shoes clean and bladed with today's Groupon for a six-week ice-skating-class package from C3 Ice Academy, held at the CU-Boulder Ice Arena (up to a $175 total value including tax), which includes:
•Six on-ice group skating lessons, held once a week for six weeks (a $95 value). This Groupon is valid for the following classes: •Snowplow
•Basic levels 1–8
•Adult levels 1–4

•Six off-ice group conditioning lessons, held once a week for six weeks (a $50 value)
•Six skate rentals for on-ice lessons (a $16 value)

C3 Ice Academy fosters both recreational and career-seeking ice skaters with instruction on and off the ice. After lacing puppies in provided skates, students can take to the frozen floor in Monday and Saturday classes tailored to beginners and beyond, ages 3 and up. Snowplow sessions introduce neophytes to footwork such as forward and backward skating, stopping, and thoroughly tickling the rink's outermost edges, and basic 1–4 folds in crossover steps. As skaters progress, they can perfect the one-legged spin and waltzing through level 8. Freestyle caps the chilly curriculum, as students say goodbye to ice-bound moves to master the single jump and the perpetual motion of the elusive helicopter.

On-ice study at C3 Ice Academy coalesces with off-ice conditioning to build all-around athletes. Once a week, skaters will pique muscles on dry land with moves that help build flexibility, technique, and strength, which better both on-ice performance and the ability to gracefully lift a station wagon.

I'm tempted to write a note to the rink manager.

Since I started tracking these things, this is the only groupon for ice skating passes that didn't sell out immediately.

. So far, 890 deals were purchased.  Maybe the total to sell was set too high at something like 1,000?
. The public sessions are shoehorned between hockey ice rentals, so they vary in length from 1.17 to 2 hours.
. Even with the 50% discount, the public session cost is overpriced for the area.
. There are a lot of other rinks in the area that a skater can choose from instead.
. Personally, I blame the groupon ad for being a turn-off to anyone who isn't a hockey player, lol.

I just found this interesting and thought I'd share.

Groupon deal: http://www.groupon.com/deals/nytex-sports-centre-3

Nytex Sports Centre in North Richland Hills

Quote
Ice is nothing more than water that won't let people swim in it. Such stubbornness deserves comeuppance in the form of sharp metallic blades that merrily crisscross to and fro across the frozen surface. Put ice in its place with today's Groupon to Nytex Sports Centre in North Richland Hills. Choose from the following options:

For $10, you get admission for two to a Friday Night Skate, including skate rentals (a $20 value).

For $49, you get eight weeks of figure or hockey skating lessons (a $99 value). Fall skating lessons begin Friday, October 14, and class registration must be complete no later than Sunday, October 23 for late entrance.

For $49, you get a Puck party package for up to 10 children (a $100 value) that includes:
•Party host
•Party room

For $59, you get a Slap Shot party package for up to 10 children (a $120 value) that includes:
•Party host
•Party room
•Two large pizzas or 10 hot dogs
•Two pitchers of soda

Nytex Sports Centre invites skaters of all ages to slice the ice across the same rink that the Central Hockey League’s Texas Brahmas call home. Pairs of gliders can slip into rental skates before showing off figure eights or slow-motion salchows during Friday Night Skate, held on select Fridays from 6:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Thirty-minute skate lessons introduce little feet to slippery surfaces during eight-week sessions, divvied up into age- and experience-appropriate levels. Youngsters of any ability can learn fancy footwork in Tot 1 & 2 (ages 3–5), Pre-Alpha (figure skaters ages 6 and older), or Hockey 1 (hockey skaters ages 6 and older); adult courses provide grown-up gliders a mature environment in which to execute flying V formations while dressed in their sharpest sequined shirts. Click here for additional FAQs on skating lessons, or call ahead to inquire about upgrading to specialized skating lessons for an additional fee, including the Competitor's class ($225) and Mini-Mite Hockey ($249).

Nytex Sport Centre also welcomes birthday ice-blazers with two festive party packages that accommodate up to 10 skaters or five skating horses. The Slap Shot celebration fuels festivities by serving up savory bites from ZuRoma Sicilian Kitchen, including hot dogs or pizzas, and both packages provide one festive room and an accompanying host for up to 90 minutes before or after public skate.

Although Nytex Sports Centre sometimes features a discounted price online, this Groupon still offers the best deal available.

That last line is a subtle reminder that you should sign up for your rink's mailing list and check the website regularly.  Many rinks offer deals throughout the year.

With ample water and cooler temperatures, Detroit is a great place to hit the pond in your skates -- as long as you don't mind frigid outdoor winds and questionable patches of ice. With today's deal from Mount Clemens Ice Arena on North Groesbeck Highway, you can experience all the joy of skating without exposure to the elements. Slide over $15 for a ten-punch card valid during public skating times -- a $35 value. Skaters will enjoy the dual NHL-regulation sized rinks offering frequent general public skate times with a number of options for themes. No skates? Rent them there for an additional fee. Buy yourself a hot chocolate from the concession stand or hit the game room and leave the snow to the skiers.

Now that the puck's dropped on another exhilarating Blues season, you can get ready for all the ice-capades with today's deal from Webster Groves Ice Arena. Lace up your skates for half off when you pay $5 (Webster Groves resident) or $6 (nonresident) for ice skating for two, including skate rental (a $10 and $12 value, respectively). Got a whole team to entertain? Pay $25 (residents) or $30 (nonresidents) for skating for up to ten people, including skate rental (a $50 and $60 value respectively). Check the schedule, and come by any time of year to enjoy the indoor rink. Whichever way you skate -- forward, backward, or round and round -- this is a real one-timer that's sure to light the lamp.

I love the resident/non-resident rates at municipal ice rinks.

Groupon: http://www.groupon.com/deals/khs-ice-arena?c=dnb&p=3

If woolly mammoths had mastered the triple Lutz, they would've made it out of the Ice Age and into the Bronze Age, if not the Silver or Gold Age. Ensure your long-term survival with today's Groupon to KHS Ice Arena in Anaheim. Choose between the following options:
•For $10, you get an ice-skating outing for two (a $26 total value), which includes the following: •Two admissions to public skate (a $20 value)
•Two skate rentals (a $6 value)

•For $30, you get a five-week beginner's figure-skating class (a $60 value).

At KHS Ice Arena, skaters glide and twirl on two 200-foot rinks, showing off inborn ice savvy during public free skate or learning the intricate techniques of figure skating with a schedule of beginner classes. Ice skating is a great way to stay active and healthy without using fancy exercise contraptions (bags of rocks, bags of corn chowder, etc.). Put those neglected leg muscles to use during free skate and burn calories while having a blast mimicking your favorite skating champs such as Elena Dementenova, Isaac Dementenova, or Russell Dementenova. For tykes or tweens looking to flaunt better form during free skate, expert instructors illuminate the icy path to figure-skating greatness with five-week tot or pre-alpha classes that teach basic skills and skating dance-duel etiquette. Each 30-minute class convenes Sundays and spins kids up to 16 years old through the fundamentals of the art form after regaling them with cautionary tales of zamboni drag races. The arena arms each student for ice-cutting glory with included skates, though novice ice dancers should come prepared in warm clothing.

Ice Den – North Scottsdale, AZ

Like the best-tasting pieces of Halloween candy, shoes are better when they have blades attached to them. Appreciate edgy footwear with today’s Groupon to Ice Den in Scottsdale. Choose between the following options:

For $15, you get a weekend ice-skating outing for two (up to a $30 total value) that includes:
•Two open-skate admissions (up to a $7 value each)
•Two skate rentals (up to a $4 value each)
•One dessert at the Ice Den’s 18º Neighborhood Grill (up to an $8 value)

For $28, you get a weekend ice-skating outing for four (up to a $60 total value) that includes:
•Four open-skate admissions (up to a $7 value each)
•Four skate rentals (up to a $4 value each)
•Two desserts at the Ice Den’s 18º Neighborhood Grill (up to an $8 value each)

Both deals are valid for any open-skate time on Saturday or Sunday.

Ice Den’s 120,000-square-foot facility hosts two NHL-sized indoor ice rinks where the Coyotes practice and the public plays, earning recognition as one of USA Today’s 10 Great Places to Cut a Fine Figure Eight. Ice skimmers lace up their choice from 800 pairs of hockey skates, figure skates, or sneakers with butcher knives taped to the bottom, available in toddler size 6 through adult size 15, before spinning triple axels in the crisp 53-degree air. Wee ones can also rent skate trainers ($3, not covered by this deal) and build their ice legs in a small coned-off area.

Dessert-seeking skaters catch their breath at the Ice Den’s 18º Neighborhood Grill, where vanilla ice cream scoops into floats, powdered sugar sprinkles fried dough, and buttermilk-cream-cheese frosting lavishes fresh cinnamon rolls. On Radio Disney nights, club lighting flashes as a DJ spins tunes, and TRL nights pair a laser light show with door prizes and a DJ who makes ice-sculpture portraits of each guest.

If woolly mammoths had mastered the triple Lutz, they would've made it out of the Ice Age and into the Bronze Age, if not the Silver or Gold Age. Ensure your long-term survival with today's Groupon to Kirkwood Ice Skating Rink. Choose from the following options:

Each outing includes:
• Admission to public skate (up to a $4 value each)
• Skate rental (a $2 value each)

At Kirkwood Ice Skating Rink, skaters etch thin whiskers onto the frozen face of a year-round indoor rink that houses five locker rooms, a warming area, and other ice-indulging amenities. Kirkwood's calendar offers up 90- or 120-minute public-skating sessions daily, welcoming all types of frozen-water walkers regardless of age, ability, or Abominable Snowman genealogy. After grabbing a pair of rental skates, strap them on near the heat billowing from the warming area's ventless fireplace, before gliding onto the glossy wintry pane to share the same arctic air as Olympic stars, former NHL players, and other heralded athletes from the rink's rich history. With each lap, solid-sea legs thaw and confidence builds, prompting skaters to leave the side rails and attempt possible tricks highlighted by the facility's natural lighting, or backward-skate straight into the center ice via its military-grade magnet.

I wish I knew what the last sentence meant.

Children occupied by constructive afterschool activities are less likely to buy BB guns or hang out with dogs that buy children BB guns. Keep tots gainfully at play with today's Groupon to Lace'em Up Ice Skating at the Foot Hills Ice Arena in Lakewood. Choose between the following options:
•For $44, you get five-week ice-skating lessons (an $89 value).
•For $44, you get five-week hockey lessons (an $89 value).

Skates can be rented for $1.

Lace'em Up Ice Skating's experienced and patient coaches lead fledgling ice gliders through interactive hour-long sessions in the large, brightly lit ice arena. During the first half hour, students glean valuable tidbits on basic skating skills through consistent instruction and blades that helpfully shout out the order of the next routine. Skaters spend the second half hour putting the skills they learned into practice, properly aligning themselves with their footwear, and learning how to shift their weight in order to execute a double-axel jump or a body check that ends in a high-five.

Marietta Ice Center – Marietta
Marietta, Georgia

Open-Skate with Rentals for Two or Four or Silver Party Package for Eight (Up to 60% Off)

If woolly mammoths had mastered the triple Lutz, they would've made it out of the Ice Age and into the Bronze Age, if not the Silver or Gold Age. Ensure your long-term survival with today's Groupon to Marietta Ice Center. Choose from the following options:
•For $10, you get two open-skate passes with ice-skate rentals (a $24 value).
•For $19, you get four open-skate passes with ice-skate rentals (a $48 value).
•For $65, you get a Silver Party Package for eight skaters (a $155 value). The party package includes: •Skate rentals for each guest
•Paper plates and cups
•Popcorn for all guests
•Soda for all guests
•One slice of pizza per guest

Graceful gliders scuttle across the well-maintained icy surface inside Marietta Ice Center’s vast, frosty palace for public-skating sessions or frictionless parties. Skating duos grip mitten-enshrouded hands before careening across the zambonied field as ice-bound barbershop quartets eschew doo-wop harmonies for reenactments of the most heartwarming Stanley Cup celebrations. With an accommodating schedule, Marietta Ice Center welcomes skaters of all experience levels to descend on the rink every day of the week or to bob and weave between laser beams during cosmic skating on Friday and Saturday nights.

For birthday parties, office celebrations, or family gatherings, patrons can host groups of eight at the rink with a Silver Party Package. Each guest slips stockinged feet into rented skates and takes to the ice for a bout of synchronized gliding, working on spins and post-triple-lutz victory dances. Patrons can tote their own birthday cake and feast on provided popcorn, a slice of pizza, and soda to refuel in the private party room, in which an on-staff host takes care of the after-party cleanup.

I lost interest in tracking these, but I know there are skatingforums meetups at Aviator Sports from time to time, so I thought there might be interest in this livingsocial deal:
