Title: 2019 Skating Resolutions
Post by: FigureSpins on January 04, 2019, 07:21:10 PM
Happy New Year!  It's time to look back on your skating-related resolutions from last year/season and make some resolutions for this year!  Note: I know some people are new / start late / prefer to wait until September to make skating resolutions - that's fine - chime in when you're ready.

Here is the 2018 Skating Resolutions thread: http://skatingforums.com/index.php?topic=7435.0

If you did well, resolve to keep doing well.  If you missed the mark, resolve to change things to move forward.

As a former Quality Improvement team member, one of the techniques I use in setting goals is to also set objectives for reaching the goals along with a time frame.  For example:

Goal: Pass Superlative Skating Test 42 before September.
Objectives:

That was just a suggestion!

What's on your list for 2019?

Tests. Simple and to the point:

1. Novice moves
2. Preliminary dances

My immediate skating goal is to keep skating through all the trying circumstances in my life.  Then to work on Bronze FS, Silver moves, and three competitions: Central Carolina, Dogwood, and Peach. Bronze just needs spins and loop. Silver needs *lots* of practice.

1. Finish the practice and competition dresses currently sitting on my sewing table. (I live in the land of unfinished projects.)
2. Toe loop. This is the year, dangit.
3. Scratch spin. Better entry, more speed, more revs, and get off the toepick!
4. One competition. I really want to do three or four, but after last year being a total washout, I'll be happy with just doing my club's comp this spring.
5. Stretch goal: sit spin. I want it, but I really need to do a lot of squats to get there.

My goals this year boil down to four things. Everything I want to do fits into one of the overarching ones:
1) Axel
2) Adult Nationals
3) Intermediate Moves
4) Improving skating technique

Since I am potentially losing my rink for a good portion of 2019 (7 months??), I am keeping my goals limited:

Land a double salchow
Gain at least 50% consistency in my axel
Take a ballet class (or two..or three...depending on how long I'm off ice)

Gold moves WAS going to be on the list, but things change. (See above ice loss  :'( )  Fingers crossed for 2020.

1. Bronze FS
2. Silver MITF

Most of the other stuff I want to be able to do is part of one of the other of those, so...

Your state games have adult events for skaters? I'm so jealous!

My daughter qualified to State Games last year so we will be there this year. If you qualify we'll be sure to be there to cheer you on!

 End of year check-in:

1) Axel : Landed October 12
2) Adult Nationals : Competed Open Silver Ladies 1 and had a not-too-good skate. Won Silver Pairs.
3) Intermediate Moves : Nope! Coach is thinking a summer session after my competition season is over so we can narrow our focus on it specifically instead of it and free skate and dance.
4) Improving skating technique : Yes, definitely. I do an Edges class now and have, somewhat reluctantly, started Dance. I can feel everything improving. Or, often, not always improving but knowing what I'm doing wrong and sometimes knowing how to correct it. I have bad habits I'm in the process of breaking. Soft knees!

I'd say that even if I didn't meet all my goals, it was still a pretty good year. Here's to the next one!
