Title: Tim Grafton's Off-Ice Jumping Pages
Post by: Isk8NYC on October 21, 2011, 09:32:47 AM
Coach Tim Grafton has a wonderful online guide to off-ice jumping, with curriculum and video.  They're perfect for lower-level skaters because it's not focused entirely on doubles and triples, it's a true "how to get started" reference.

I am hesitant to have dd do more than the warmups.  I don't want her to get injured or do something incorrectly.  I'd rather her coaches have her do a couple minutes at the end of a lesson.  Once she feels "right" then she can do it on her own.  It's a great reference, but without a pair of professional eyes i don't want her to form bad habits.  Jumps are expensive to learn as it is!

Nor do I  (want to get injured!) I'm going on my own coaches instructions to do these jump drills.  We talked about them on the rink. Not sure how old dd is .. but this was simple enough for me to take the instruction and do on my own.  When I found the videos online, it helped me see how they might look as my legs get stronger ....and as you mention to use as a reference.  Needless to say all of my videos and/or suggestions come with an assumed "fine print" ..... Do not attempt to do this without supervision or professional help AND This video does not by any means exemplefy an instructional video!!!  I'm so new (back on the ice) I am still a little thrilled by it all.  Each day I am fully taking in all the little triumphs and setbacks and realizing .... how bloody difficult it is - at any age ..... especially mine.

Happy Landings..

It's just I hear so much about kids getting doubles and then having to learn their jumps all over again with triples.  She has a jump specialist, I don't want to have her "undo" something he has taught.  Just being cautious.

Have your daughter follow her coaches advice... :)

Thanks for your opinion and concern, but this thread wasn't intended for the mothers of future elite skaters, it was meant as an inexpensive resource for our mostly-adult members who don't have time/access to a off-ice jump class or specialist.

I think anyone (esp. an adult) who has ever taken an off-ice jump class or a well-taught fitness class can use this coach's curriculum safely without screwing up their triples, lol. It's also beneficial as a learning tool for our coaching members.

Are we mostly adult skaters on this board?... I wonder what the percentage is.  (jjane45.. is blue better?)

I would say it predominantly is.  There are some of us who who are also skater moms (though my kids are still very low level and I have no huge ambitions for them beyond having fun) but if you take notice, you'll notice that most posters are talking about themselves - there are only a handful of regulars who routinely talk about their kids.

I don't know why that is yet I've noticed that many other boards are similar... it's more skaters than parents.

IMO our forum is noted for an active adult skater community. Percentage-wise I'll take FigureSpins' words :)
My teary & sensitive eyes say THANK YOU!

Our active members (who post) are mostly adult skaters - probably more than 80% of the contributors.  There are probably two dozen skating parents, some of whom are adult skaters, and a handful of people who have no longer have an active link to skating, but like to chat.

I am terrified to do off ice jumps.  I will do jump drills and land on two feet, but I won't try actual skating jumps because I instinctively try to stick a landing on one leg- and there goes my knee.  I twisted it on axel preps some time ago, and I haven't the courage to try again.

I know you are supposed to land hopping so as to avoid a knee injury, but I can't seem to do it right, without damaging an already fragile landing knee.  Honestly the off ice jumps hurt more than the do on ice, even when I fall.  Does anyone else have this issue?
