I’m signed up!  Anyone else?

You may need a current USFSA ID number to register.

Tip: you don’t need to have a Fitbit or other tracker - you can enter the number of steps manually.

ETA: Starts 1/1/2019 but it’s already 3/4 full so don’t wait!

If the MoveSpring app asks for a registration code, it’s FITSKATE.

Any details about what the actual challenge is once you sign up?  The link just takes you to a page to set up a MoveSpring account.

Haven’t seen any details yet. At minimum, it’s a “steps” challenge.  Now that I set up a MoveSpring account, I’m getting notifications on my phone.

Is it open to those of us outside the US?

Too late- it's full.  Can some one give deets on the challenge though?  Perhaps we can do our own Skating Forums challenge to those of us too late of the block.

We have to join teams - if Someone starts a skatingforums team, I’ll join with you!

Everything *except* the step challenge will be on Facebook so make sure to follow the U.S. Adult Skating Committee facebook page for info. The step challenge will be done on the MoveSpring platform. If you didn't get into that, there will still be lots of ways you can participate so stay tuned! Downloading the calendar is a great place to start.

Yes, the "teams" on MoveSpring are by section! This is the only thing there will be "teams" for so feel free to track your progress on skatingforums as well - the more the merrier!

The adult committee posted on FB that the only team will be for their members.

EDIT: This was changed after the post.  They've now divided the ordinary skaters into teams based on their Section.

The adult committee posted that the only team will be for their members.

After that it was decided it would be fun to add a team for each section and participants were added into that based on their section selected when registering for Movespring. :)

When I first received the "Join a Team" option, it only listed the Adult Committee team, but now we have indeed been grouped into sections.
 Go Eastern Sectionals!

Can you explain the calendar pdf's purpose?  Are those suggested challenges or are we supposed to be making up our own to put on a calendar?

As someone else said, we can do this without being signed up with the app.  The app is focused on recording steps, but you can use any step tool for that - if you have a Fitbit or Apple Watch, they have built-in trackers that can feed to your phone or an app.  Every iPod and iPhone I've owned has had a "Steps" or "Health" app that tracks steps automatically.  You can even use a pedometer.  Just be sure to carry whatever tracker you choose so that it captures your movement.

I use MyFitnessPal (MFP) since it automatically captures my iPhone or Fitbit activity.  I can add other exercises to MFP, including skating, but it records calories burned for those activities, not steps.

There was an short app discussion about tracking steps on the ice.  There are conversions for skating-to-steps or skating-to-calories -- search the forum for more info.  One good suggestion was to attach a pedometer to your skate to track steps.  I've never tried it, but secure it well so it doesn't fall off, please.  (Sport tape would be good.)

The calendar challenge for 1/1/2019 is to set a daily step goal for the month of January 2019.  I'll use my iPod Nano to track steps since it's so small and has a clip to attach to clothing.

Anyone who wants to have a skatingforums-only version of this challenge is welcome to share their goals here!

I picked 3,000 steps/day for a goal.

I recently discovered the step counter app on my iPhone. It looks like a reasonable goal for me is 6000 steps, but that won't count skating. My phone is on the boards playing music most times I skate. This goal will be in addition to skating.

BTW, the January 2019 issue of Scientific American has a story about why humans require significant exercise to prevent health issues. They give 10k steps per day as something we should strive (stride?) for. I tried that, and it takes a serious chunk of the day to reach that lofty goal. Great story, though.

Today's FB post, for those of you who don't do FB:

SKATE FOREVER STRONG (DAY 2) It's week 1 of our 2019 Skate Forever Strong activity challenge. First up: steps!

Our MoveSpring step challenge has filled up, and it runs from January 1st-March 31st! But don't worry, you can still participate in this part of Skate Forever Strong by setting your own step goal. We suggest aiming for 10,000 steps a day, but hey... the more, the merrier!

Many skaters find it difficult to track steps while they’re on the ice. If you’re looking to get more step credit while skating, we suggest getting creative with where you wear your tracker. Since your feet do more movement than your wrist, we recommend skating with the tracker not on your wrist. Many skating pants have built-in pockets which are perfect for holding fitness trackers. Simply tucking your tracker into a pocket of a jacket can also help it understand that you’re being active on the ice. Additionally, smaller trackers can easily tuck into a bunga sleeve and track movement at the ankle.

A resource on activity-to-step conversion (including skating and other activities) can be found here:
https://movespring.com/resources/activity-converter/

Do you love step tracking? Tell us all about it. #SkateForeverStrong.

The calendar is a guideline and hopefully a helpful tool. The things listed on each each Monday (Tuesday for 1/1!) relate to things being posted by the ASC on FB on those weeks - steps, squats, planks, mobility and balance. There will be content to go along with these five main parts. Everything else is a suggestion or idea. Same with the goals on the side. Some ideas provided for you and room to make up your own! The idea is that this program is something that can be done in some way by EVERY adult skater, no matter the age or fitness level.

I'm personally trying to hit 10K steps every day this month.

Let me know if you have more questions!

Ok, I've got my HRM/Steptracker fired up and ready to go.  By default it sets my daily goal at 10k steps.  I've never changed it before, and don't plan to now.  I rarely hit the 10k, but it's a good reminder.

I'm coming off a meniscus injury, and only get back on the ice Sat after a 5 week dr-mandated-break.  Although its a bit worse now, the knee has been bothering me for 1.5 years, and no PT or Osteo has helped, so I have an appt with the first gym on Friday to scope out their deals.  I've been avoiding gyms, because here in France they're more expensive than i was used to stateside, and they don't open until 7am, which for me is too late (I need to be BACK by 7), and I can't go after work.  So I need to sort that out, plan B is I'm determined to hire my friend who's a personal trainer.  I'm hoping that general strengthening, whilst babying (but only to a reasonable degree) the knee will help sort things out, and avoid the MRI (next step) and its potential downstream consequences.

So my Jan goals surround sorting out a gym/personal training routine, plus whatever the Skateforeverstrong people throw our way!

In the past I tried putting a pedometer in my pocket or clipped to my belt but it barely registered any steps while skating.
Same thing with skiing, but I can kind of understand that.

Maybe I need to clip it to my boot for both activities.

Interesting how the conversion chart lists
In Line Skating = 190
Rollerblading = 156

What is the difference in In-Line and Rollerblading?
Do I get to use 190 if I use my K2 skates but  have to use 156 if I use my old Rollerblades?

AND
Ice Skating , Moderate = 122
I guess they factor in ice having less friction than concrete/asphalt so it is easier to stroke on ice?

Skiing = 109 so I'll get between 40,000 and 50,000 each on Saturday and Sundays.

Today's post:

SKATE FOREVER STRONG (DAY 3) We hope everyone has set a solid step goal for the year! Thanks to Amelia Prentice Keene for sending us these activity conversion charts, which include skating and other activities which can be difficult to track.

What's your step goal for January? #SkateForeverStrong

EDIT: I can't link you to the images of the original post because not everyone has a Facebook account.  Here is a very-similar chart with the same details:

NB: Zumba is missing from this chart: the multiplier is 90.

The Calendar previously linked has "Set a Sleep Goal" listed for today, so do it and stick to it!  Studies have shown that rest is critical to weight loss and good health.  I had a discussion with a friend this weekend who works in mental health and she adamantly stated that three days without sleep leads to mental health issues.  Long-term sleep deprivation can have lasting affects such that, even when you have the time for a good night's sleep, you wouldn't be able to stay asleep long enough.

I've been on vacation since 12/20, sleeping late every. single. day.  Ahhhh.  Had my first deep sleep last night with a wierd dream to boot!  I feel so much more refreshed today and focused!

STEP GOAL: 3,000/day - on target so far!
SLEEP GOAL: 8-10 hrs/night - hopefully, I can keep it up!

Went to the gym last night and rewarded myself afterwards by using the massage chair!  I really like that feature of Planet Fitness - trying to get up the courage to use the tanning room, just to see what it's like.  (never been)

Hit double my step count as a result, even without using the steps counted by my iPod that I attached to one of my students!  I had him go for a run with it on, to increase the count, lol!  Over 6,000 steps - not bad at all.

Went back to tracking my food and water intake on MyFitnessPal (MFP) since I'm using the app for steps and exercise.  What's an extra 15 mins/day, right?

Funny thing is, when I mis-spell a food name or word, MFP still comes up with suggestions!  That's because other people make the same mistake but don't notice their error.

Been keeping track of formal exercise time equivalents, not everyday walking around.

Wed: 7000 + casual
Thu: 9000 + casual
Fri: 7000 + casual.

Tomorrow I start cross training in order to teach snowboard lessons as well as ski. Seems we have a shortage of snowboard instructors this season, usually we have too many. Between ski and snowboard I should get 8 hours on snow for around 80,000 equivalent and 50,000 on Sunday.
