Skate Swaps

Just out of curiosity, how do your local clubs handle skate swaps? What I mean is, how much commission do they charge(if any!) and what kind of policies do they have in place?

Our club takes 20% of all sales. We use our skate swaps as a fundraiser for the club. We ask that items are labeled with price and seller name and phone number. Participants are paid at the end of the swap.

Both rinks I skate at are municipal rinks without clubs, but guess the skate swaps function similarly. IRRC both charges 10% commission, one rink has stricter policy regarding drop off and pick up (very short time window on the day of skate swap, must fill out forms to obtain a seller number, rules on how to label, unsold items not picked up within required timeframe get discarded etc), and the other quite laid back (drop off at and pick up from concession stand anytime). Cash transactions only. Lots of volunteer work IMO.

I think the local rink charges 15% for skate sales. One lady runs the sale with a couple of assistants. She'll receive skates to sell on the day, will price them (if you've not priced them yourself) and sell them. If they don't sell that month, they're just packed away and brought back next month.

The skate sale is very popular with the LTS parents and also the low level freestyle parents. Adult size skates sell very quickly as parents of teenagers don't want to necessarily spend out lots of money on a passing hobby.

And it's been such a success (has been running 15+ years now), there's now a second stall selling dresses on the same basis.

10% of the proceeds goes to a charity that the club has long supported.

The rink keeps all costumes and skates for sale in the office (no liability for them on their part).  They call you to pick up a check if they sell.
 
No commission to the rink.
