This topic title made me chuckle, because little kids often assume there is a body of water under the ice.  This was especially true for our former outdoor rink, which was next to, but not on, a lake.  DH once even had to assure a little boy that there was no water, and especially no sharks

We have a tennis court under the ice.  There should be sharks, though.

We have a shark logo at center ice and it's a little scary for tiny tots.

My story for the nasty little public skaters who persist in digging holes in the ice with the heel of their skate after polite requests don't work: If you dig holes in the ice you'll fall thru into the basement with the pirhanas. It's amazing how many of them believe me, but even if they don't, we can then have a laugh together while I explain how inconsiderate & dangerous it can be for all the skaters.

There's sand under ours. It was coming up over the summer due to a combination of heat and broken pipes.

You're all so funny - great thread drift.  I used to skate at a sand rink and everyone knew when I was there - I'm so bloody loud on sand-based rinks.  When they gutted our rink a few years ago to fix the "warming floor," I got a first-hand look at the strata.
