Question about number of judges
« on: August 19, 2012, 02:16:54 PM »
I have a question about the number of judges and scores. If you have acomp with three judges and seven judges, are the scores going to come out the same? I know you take each score, add and then divide by number of judges. So the average is the average but it just seems like the numbers are higher overall with more judges?

For IJS, it depends on the range of scores. If the scores are very tight together, it shouldn't matter.  For 6.0, it's been hashed further down

I was talking about IJS.It seems like with seven judges, you might have one or two low, and the rest mid or higher. With only three judges, when one is low it brings the other two down.

Same argument, if one is high - it brings them up.  Being able to toss out the lowest and highest scores with the larger panels does smooth things out.

Ultimately, it's still a subjective sport. They've tried to make it more objective but it's still based on opinion.
It's also not the judges which necessarily decide the score as the Technical Specialists are the ones deciding whether to call a jump or spin level. Some competitions don't have video replay facilities so you may end up with a higher mark because they give the skater the benefit of the doubt, whereas if they had video replay the skater might not get the call if they're carefully measuring jump take off and landing positions.
