Title: Adult Nationals - Are you going?
Post by: Adultsk8r509 on March 10, 2013, 07:33:33 PM
Hi everyone,

I have been wondering who is going to AN this April.  I have "met" so many of you via my posts.. hope to meet some of you in person.

I fought so hard to pass bronze so I could, but it is just too much money.

Best of luck to all who go!

I haven't passed my bronze tests yet, but I'm hoping I can go next year!

To anyone here who is competing - my sincere admiration for getting so very far. It takes so much work and as a remedial beginner I respect the time and effort it takes!

Whenever AN is held on the West Coast, or in the Western US, it just becomes too expensive for me to go. Maybe next year, but East Coast and New England is expensive, too.

I'll be there, competing in Bronze Solo Dance, Silver I FS and Silver I Dramatic. My club is hosting, and it's at my home rink, so I'm excited.

I've got the MIF but not the FS ... I'm with you... soon as I pass I want to try.

I am hoping 2015 will be somewhere closer to me... AZ might have been doable (but I'm nowhere near ready.. still have tests to pass) and MA is just too far (and too spendy).

I've got the MIF but not the FS ... I'm with you... soon as I pass I want to try.

What are you missing?  Is it just the backspin?  I think they would pass you on yours, honestly.... it only says one foot and 3 revolutions, which edge is not a requirement :)  I know someone who tested through silver FS who did theirs on an inside edge.. didn't really present a problem as far as testing went.

I'm missing so much (in my opinion) .. I would like a solid back spin, a lower sit spin with a change of position, a lutz, a camel spin and enough stamina.  I know much of that is not required for Bronze, but I would rather not compete unless I am already steadily practicing up at the next level....It's a lot of money to spend on coaching, choreography, dress, travel, etc just to show up and fall or do poorly.
That's me.... and I am in no way criticizing anyone else who participates with the bare minimum skills.  I commend them all for their dedication. I learned in July after my 1 and only competition skate IN MY LIFE .. that it's much harder than it looks.  When I first considered skating a competition after viewing a lot of adult skating competitors ... I watched many many programs and said to myself ... "I can do that spin"  "I can do that jump" "etc, but when you link them all together it's entirely different.  No time to un-dizzy yourself from a spin, no time to catch your breath after a jump before trying to be graceful and perform a pretty spiral ... Stamina is 1/2 of it....... I hope I can build some this year.  (Sorry for the long answer - I should save this stuff for my blog)

Just because you are practicing up at the next level doesn't mean something won't happen as a surprise (lightening strike fall, missed spin entry...).  You can't plan for ALL eventualities and sometimes it's better to be prepared at least enough to go and let the rest just happen...

I stopped doing Adult Nationals when they eliminated figures. I'll probably only go again if I qualify at Easterns.
