Bulging near the flex notch
« on: January 02, 2013, 04:27:37 PM »
Is it right for skates to have a bulge near the flex notch? I usually have a bulge on the inside flex notch on both skates. Is this right, or is this a problem? If you want I can attach a photo.

It CAN be a sign that the boots are too wide. Properly, a boot should should crease and "bend" with the ankle; if they are too wide around the ankle (or if you've been lacing them too loosely) - they can "spread" and bulge.  A pic would be helpful - it's hard to tell if it's normal breakin or something eise.

I think it depends on the size too.. a small bulge more like a wrinkle is probably okay, but a larger bulge could be any number of things.. from the wrong size/width to just not tying the skates tightly enough in that area.

What's the flex notch?

It's the V-shaped cut at the ankle, between the lace holes and the hooks. It's to help bend at the ankles without compromising the rest of the boot, from what I've understood.

As for the OP's question, I second the opinion that a picture would be helpful - some creasing is fine, but a large bulge suggests a too-large fit.

It looks like the edges of the flex notch are just flaring out a little, which I would consider "normal" - there's nothing holding that leather down, after all :)

Have you tried crossing the laces before using the hooks?  For some reason it takes pressure off the notch area on my daughters skates.  So after you are done lacing, pretend you are going to tie your skates (cross, one under) then use the hooks.
