Dumb question.. lace bar on Riedells
« on: August 05, 2011, 06:47:01 PM »
So, how do you use the tongue lace bar that comes on many Riedells? It's a little mechanism that sits in the middle of the tongue. I can't figure out how I'm supposed to lace through/around it.

Thanks..

At the notch before the hooks I tie it twice.  Then I use the hook and go over.  For the next one when I get near the bar, pull the left lace under the bar and back over the bar.  I do the same with the other lace but on the other side.

Kind of like this around the bar, but I don't see a photo of it being tied at the notch first.  http://www.shop.kinziescloset.com/images/1236622163180-241640966.gif

The way Riedell wants it to be used is shown in the picture of the tongue bar on this page of their catalogue:

Dd finds if they aren't tied over 2x's before the hooks that they don't stay tight enough.  It just kind of locks them in.

This doesn't have the hook, but I've never seen laces tied up the hook and back down again.  Kind of interesting.

I used this technique this afternoon, and I do like it. If only my left ankle hadn't been giving me trouble for unrelated reasons.

Yes I'm in with the 90's. I have a skating blog. http://icedoesntcare.blogspot.com/

Yeah, I've always done the tie before the hooks as well.

It's interesting how the guy in the video said tying the toe/inset laces helps push the foot back into the heel of the skate, and doesn't squish toes. Next time I tie my skates up I'll be sure to tighten those laces as much as possible.
Once I loop the laces around the tongue bar, I can't pull them tight so I have to make sure the bottom two hooks are tight enough before going around the bar.

I saw this on the Riedell Facebook page:

Looks like you lace up to the tongue bar, then go around it and back to the hooks in a zig-zag fashion.

Riedell's custom boots rep told me to go all the way up to the 3rd hook, then down to the bar and then to the fourth hook.  According to him, this way the tongue does not slide down towards the toes, since it is pulled up.   This is not what the picture shows, though.

This is how I lace my Jacksons, although the tongue hook is a little different (the hooks face each other, so you don't have to cross the right side over the left).

I usually hook the bottom two, then the lace bar, then the next hook, and I tie a bow and loop that over the top loop - I never actually "tie" it.

The photo they posted was in response to my question on the Riedell fb page about lacing over vs. under with the lace bar. I lace mine exactly the way they show in that photo, except my boots are brand new so I don't use the top hook.

I just saw the photo and thought it would be helpful to Sierra. They've been posting all sorts of helpful hints, tips and videos, so I just went to their album to get the bigger image.
