Good recreational skate
« on: November 20, 2013, 12:55:36 AM »
I recently posted about width/size of a pair of skates I saw online. Now I feel kind of wary about buying something online/very little info.

What would you recommend for a basic recreational skate that is not too expensive? It would only be used for forward and backwards skating, very recreational (not lessons) and nothing high-impact. (This wouldn't be for me, luckily my skates are good right now).

I was thinking Riedell Soft Series or Jackson Glacier?

Maybe try the Jackson Softec ones - they fit more like a runner and aren't too expensive.  Great for little kids starting out, and they work for adults who want to rec skate a few times a year.  We see a lot of them at our rink; the adults in them can do more than you'd expect the boot to hold up for.

Jackson Softec is what I used as rental skates for the past 6 weeks. Brand new they were fine for Adult 1 and part of Adult 2. I didn't feel strong on forward outside edges and could not get on backward outside edges at all (see my post about my new skates) but I was able to do forward and backward 1/2 swizzles on a circle with no problem. They were fine for stroking, forward crossovers, long 1 foot glides, 2 foot turns, backwards swizzles and backward 2 foot glides.

Those sound like they might be a good option. Thank you!

I wore a size 10 Softec womens (women's sizes is what the rink stocks) and measure to an 8 1/2 Wide mens Jackson and 8 1/2 to 9 Wide Riedell. The Softec didn't cramp my foot any because of the soft shell, but part of the support issue I had was the tongue was not fully inside the cuff when I laced them up. Probably due to the size of my lower calf and ankle bones.
